More fixtures added, plus some new features

I’ve spent the last handful of days preparing another round of updates to the site, and they all went live last night.

So what’s new?

I’ve also updated the fixtures and results for the NHL and NBA playoffs, apologies for falling behind on these, better late than never right?

New features

“Grouped” league standings/tables, for example when you view the NBA standings they are now grouped by the division that the team belongs to. I’m still adding these groupings in so they aren’t working just yet on other sports such as MLB etc. Will be soon though, promise.

Friendlier “pretty” permalinks for team pages. No more needing to know the numerical id for a team on nextgame to work out what page to look at. Again, I’m still working through setting these up for all teams. The World Cup teams, NBA, NFL and A-League should all be working so far. A couple of examples:

As always if you’ve got any suggestions or feature requests etc, I’d love to hear them, just leave a comment.

It’s Showtime

I’ve just finished loading up the 1st Round schedules for both the NBA and NHL playoffs, as well as the firs two rounds of the D-League playoffs.

The full 2010 Arena Football League schedule is also now available, and the 2010 Indoor Football League and 2010/2011 NFL schedule will be up in the next week or so (NFL schedule isn’t officially released until the 20th).

I’ve also added a few more rounds t the NRL schedule now that the dates and times have been finalised, and don’t forget the full 2010 MLB schedule has also been up for a few weeks now.

Another new addition is a per-league day-by-day view, so, instead of seeing every game from all your selected leagues on a particular day you can just check out you could for example just see what NBA playoff games are on April 20 ( http://nextga.me/day/2010-04-20/21 ). To see this view pick a league from the main menu and the select the “Day-by-Day game listing” link just above the game list. (I’ll look at improving its placement in the near future, as I think this is a useful feature.)

Still progressing

I haven’t forgotten about nextga.me I’ve just been managing to sidetrack myself a little too much over the past couple of weeks. That and I usually return home from work with absolutely no desire to work on anything, so lately I haven’t been.

I’m about 90% done with processing another 800 or so fixtures to add to the initial database, which should bring to around 5,000 in total. Then following launch I’ll start work on collating the MLB schedule, which might take a while.

As far as the code and design go, they’re just about ready to go, although there will no doubt be endless polishing and tweaking once it goes live.

My goal for the weekend is to finish off the initial data set, make any “required” design/code updates, gather a few missing team logos and then start looking towards a launch date. How far I’ll get I’m not sure, but I’ll try my best ;)

A peak at the design

Still progressing, have actually started looking at the design for nextgame in the last week or so, below are few sneak peaks at what I’ve got so far, still lots to do but you get the general idea. Would love any feedback or suggestions.

Let the games begin

Welcome to 2010 and welcome to “nextgame”. What is it I hear you asking? Well put simply it is all the sporting schedules you could need, in one place, converted to your timezone. At this point we’re only looking at team sports such as basketball, football, ice hockey, rugby league etc.

We’re still in early (but rapid) development, and data collection mode. So far we’ve collected almost 5,000 individual fixtures from major sporting competitions from all around the world. The ever-growing list currently includes the following:

  • A-League (Australia)
  • AFL (Australia)
  • NRL (Australia)
  • NBA D-League (USA)
  • WNBA (USA)
  • NBL (Australia)
  • NBA (USA and Canada)
  • EPL (England)
  • NHL (USA and Canada)
  • Super 14 Rugby (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa)
  • Super League (England)
  • MLS (USA)
  • VFL (Australia)
  • WNBL (Australia)
  • International Rugby (Australia)
  • Tri-Nations Rugby (Australia)
  • Toyota Cup Rugby League (Australia)
  • State of Origin Rugby League (Australia)
  • AFL NAB Cup (Australia)

If you’d like to suggest a sport or specific league/competition that you’d like to see included we’d love to hear it, the more the merrier. The next on our list are Major League Baseball and also the NFL (once they release the full schedule for next year).

We’re still finalising the ways in which you’ll be able to view and interact with all this data that we’re busy collecting, so keep an eye on this blog for future updates.
